Mary journeys through the desert, earnestly praying for God to grant her a child, in order to bring joy to her father, Ori Pfeffer, an olive farmer who wishes for a descendant. The angel Gabriel, played by Dudley O’Shaughnessy, communicates to her father that his desire has been fulfilled, resulting in the birth of Jesus, the Messiah, in Bethlehem. There, she deftly avoids the threats from Herod’s henchmen and a barn fire, retreating to the desert, where she places her newborn son in a wicker basket and sends him to safety.
