Set in the fictional village of Wisborg in 1838, Thomas Hutter's employer assigns him the mission of travelling to Transylvania to meet with Count Orlok, a prospective buyer for a property across from Hutter's house. When Hutter notices how terrified the inhabitants at the inn are by Orlok, he starts to feel uneasy. When he arrives at the castle and Orlok takes an odd interest in Hutter's bleeding thumb from an unintentional injury, his nervousness increases. After spending the night there, Hutter wakes up the next morning to discover puncture scars on his neck.
