Elwood is a remarkable student, known for his intelligence and compassion for others. With the guidance of his creative teacher, he is on the brink of college. Tragically, his dreams are disrupted by a series of unfortunate and biased incidents that lead to his wrongful accusation of being an accomplice to a car theft. This results in his placement at Nickel Academy, a harmful and abusive reformatory school located in the Jim Crow South during the 1960s in Florida.
