The brutalist, I ended up using a portion of the 215-minute break to look up the name László Toth because I was certain that the architect in Brady Corbet's engrossing but confusing film had to have been a real mid-century person. However, Toth is wholly fictional—a creation of Corbet's imagination that represents a specific school of thinking, an artistic heritage, and an entire era—much as Lydia Tár before him. His portrayal is so well-developed that it can fool a gullible audience like me, offering a thorough examination of a person that seems to provide important facts about a larger setting. The first part of The Brutalist is called "The Enigma of Arrival," and the second part is called "The Hard Core of Beauty."
