Dr. John Watson is racing through the woods when he hears a gunshot in the distance. As he summons Sherlock Holmes, there is another gunshot. As Watson reaches the shore, a shot is fired, and Sherlock and James Moriarty tumble into the ocean. Watson is later seen face down in the river with his head bleeding after Sherlock and Moriarty fall over a waterfall. Watson lies in a hospital bed, unconscious. Shinwell Johnson explains the incident. When Watson awakens a few days later, he cannot recognize Shinwell. When Shinwell reveals who he is, Watson calls his nickname "ludicrous." Shinwell adds that he suffered a serious brain injury while laughing and gripping his palm.
