MICKEY 17 feels like it’s trying to juggle too many things at once.watch on MyFlixer 2025Whether it’s a sharp joke or a pointed satire, everything just ends up canceling itself out. The director seems to lack a clear vision. When it comes to pure science fiction spectacle, it falls short—too predictable and way too long. As for its take on contemporary sociopolitical issues, it’s painfully obvious and lacks any real intellectual depth. Talented actors like Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo portray a billionaire couple in a way that’s surprisingly unfunny and, frankly, quite embarrassing, almost like it’s meant for kids. Collette’s character, Ylfa, has an over-the-top obsession with sauces that quickly becomes grating, and the gag loses its charm as it drags on. Bong doesn’t seem interested in delivering a sharp satire of our times. Even as absurdity, the chaotic mix just doesn’t land.
What could have saved the film is a tonal shift, something we often see in Bong Joon-ho's work. And sure enough, that shift occurs when Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 meet and need to figure out how to survive together. But unfortunately, it veers in the wrong direction. This is when Bong takes the film into mainstream territory and cranks up the silliness. Yet again, Robert Pattinson showcases his versatility, demonstrating how a seemingly shallow role can shine with the right touch. His poignant walk, his resigned compassion, and the subtle gestures when the spotlight is on others are what keep you engaged with Mickey 17.
It’s hard to decipher what the filmmaker was aiming for by stripping down the dialogue to irritatingly simplistic terms like "shitty" and "fucked up." It leaves you guessing—much like many elements of the plot and direction. The non-linear storytelling is, aside from Pattinson, the film’s strongest aspect. And when it comes to evoking emotions, Bong Joon-ho doesn’t miss the mark here either. But MICKEY 17 also carries a political and socially critical message.
