The Alto Knights tells the story of Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, two mob lords from the 1950s. Remarkably, the film was ever made because it is so full of clichés. Given that De Niro, Levinson, and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi have all contributed to the creation of renowned crime dramas over the previous 25 years, it is remarkable that their talents are being combined on this project. De Niro even portrays both Genovese and Costello, using several prosthetics to mimic a younger version of himself.
