David Ayer is an unquestionably honest filmmaker who distinguishes himself from other genre narrative writers and directors by avoiding overt parody and cynicism. While the serious and gritty approach that served him well in "End of Watch" may not have translated successfully in "Bright," it is commendable that Ayer maintains a belief in treating his audience with respect. His films have a certain amount of self-awareness, but they don't hide their unadulterated emotional power or their occasionally direct themes. Ayer has made a name for himself with films like "A Working Man," which combine B-movie thrills with real emotional depth to create an entertaining viewing experience, despite his forays into both highbrow and mainstream filmmaking.
