Shal Ngo’s aptly named body horror film, Control Freak, centers on Valerie (portrayed by Kelly Marie Tran), a motivational speaker who begins her journey by addressing her audience about the importance of rejecting the negative inner voice that holds one back. Despite grappling with a persistent itch on her scalp, Valerie enjoys considerable popularity and is preparing for an upcoming tour across Asia. This international journey necessitates her locating her birth certificate, compelling her to confront her complicated family background. Upon reuniting with her father, a Vietnam War veteran turned Buddhist monk, she learns that her scalp irritation, along with recurring visions of ants and a shadowy figure, stems from a demonic parasite that latches onto its host, relentlessly consuming them until nothing remains. Initially skeptical of her father's claims, Valerie ultimately recognizes the need for drastic action as the situation intensifies.
